Frequently Asked Questions

What is the commitment?
There is no long-term contract. Programs are offered in six-week sessions, so you are committing only to the current six-week session. At the end of each session, you can decide whether you’d like to continue into the next one.
This keeps things flexible for families while still giving students enough consistent time to learn, progress, and build relationships with their group.
What if I want to sign up for consecutive sessions now?
You can, you can sign up for any upcoming session just select the instalment option and the payment will be taken the first day of each session.
Why are the classes so small?
Small classes are intentional.
I believe students learn best when they receive individual attention and have the opportunity to actually work with their instructor. Keeping classes small allows me to provide more personalized instruction, create a supportive environment, and get to know each student and their individual needs.
It also means I can maintain a high-quality experience rather than simply trying to fit as many students as possible into a room.
Classes have limited spaces and waitlists will be used when classes are full.
Why six-week sessions?
Six weeks gives students enough consistency to learn, practise, build confidence and see progress, without requiring families to commit to an entire year.
The breaks between sessions are intentional too. They give families—and me—a chance to recharge, while creating opportunities for special workshops, camps, discovery classes and other programs throughout the year.
It also allows each new session to evolve based on the interests and needs of the students.

Why do you need a WAKO Membership?
WAKO (World Association of Kickboxing Organizations) is the international governing organization for kickboxing and the organization connected with the competitive kickboxing pathway I use.
Being part of the WAKO system provides the appropriate club/athlete insurance and allows students who are interested in competition to have a pathway into sanctioned events and competition.
Even for students who aren’t interested in competing, maintaining the appropriate martial arts insurance and association memberships is an important part of operating responsibly.
Why do you teach out of your basement instead of a studio?
Flicker to a Flame is intentionally starting as a small, home-based program.
My training space is fully matted and equipped specifically for martial arts, allowing me to provide quality instruction without the overhead of a commercial studio. Keeping the classes small also allows me to focus on the students rather than trying to fill a large facility.
This model lets Flicker to a Flame grow intentionally and sustainably, while keeping class sizes small and prices reasonable.
And because Flicker to a Flame is about more than martial arts, keeping my schedule and overhead manageable also allows me to eventually expand into creative classes, workshops and other community opportunities.
Why is Little Sparks different from a regular kids’ martial arts class?
Little Sparks isn’t an adult martial arts class made smaller—it’s designed specifically for the way young children learn. At ages 3–5, we’re building the foundations first: coordination, balance, body awareness, listening, boundaries, confidence and learning how to move safely, all through age-appropriate games, activities and introductory martial arts.
The goal isn’t to turn a four-year-old into a fighter. It’s to give them their first spark of confidence and help them discover what their bodies can do. As they grow, those foundations give them a strong starting point for whatever martial arts path they choose next.
What will my child actually learn in Little Sparks?
Little Sparks introduces young children to the foundations of martial arts in a fun, positive environment. Depending on their age and development, classes may include movement and coordination games, basic Jiu-Jitsu positions and movements, striking fundamentals, balance, falling safely, boundaries, following directions, and simple age-appropriate self-defence concepts.
Every class has a purpose—but it should still feel like fun. At this age, if they’re having fun, they’re learning.
